Department of Chemical Sciences at I. K. Gujral PTU strives to achieve excellence in research and teaching in Chemistry. The Department has well-furnished and centrally air conditioned laboratories. The laboratories are utilized for the day to day practical course work of the science students.

The Department is supported by the library possessing a vast variety of titles related to the different streams of Chemistry.  The Department has its own book bank for catering the daily need of the students.

The faculty is extremely well qualified and motivated with a strong commitment to research which is reflected in the sanctioned projects sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Atomic Energy, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and many other organizations.

S.No. Ongoing Projects Sanctioned amount Funding agency
1 Synthesis , cycloaddition biological evaluation and synthetic transformation of mono-/polycyclic b-lactams 23 Lakh Department of Science and Technology (DST)
2 Transition metal catalysed inter-/intramolecular cycloaddtion reactions of methylene & vincylcyclopropanes:synthesis of bi-/tricyclic systems” 22 Lakh Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS)

The Department is involved in research on Organic Synthesis, Synthesis and Characterization of Transition Metal Complexes (with relevance to biology), Organometallic Chemistry, Metal Catalysed Cycloaddition Reaction, Physical Organic Chemistry, Material Chemistry and Theoretical Chemistry etc.  In addition, much of the research in the Department involves the application of Chemistry to solve the problem in other areas of Chemistry and Science. The Department has licensed versions of different scientific software to explore the problems in theoretical Chemistry.
The Department is currently offering the CBCS based Master Programme in Chemistry (M.Sc.). The two-year M.Sc. Programme in Chemistry equips the students with the necessary skills for participating in research groups or for the independent leadership and management of complex work and development situations within the field.
