7The Department has been established keeping in mind the growing demand for specialized courses in media at the pre doctoral research level. In contrast to traditional media courses, the new course focuses on research, analysis and application of media in diverse fields. The Department aims to become a premier academic and industry oriented organization, providing critical understanding about media and its engagement with society and economy in India. The Department is different from other schools of media, as it prepares analysts and not just journalists. Interdisciplinary approaches in the field of evolution, role, relevance and impact of media will be encouraged here.

The course curriculum and the teaching and training methods are designed keeping in view the needs of the industry. For creating such industry oriented atmosphere the Department firmly believes in regular interaction with industry experts, attaching students with local media organisations and internship training each year during summer vacation.

8The Department takes keen interest in training and placement of the students and the faculty keeps a close watch on the student’s performance and try their best for proper utilisation of their time. Consequently, some students find placement in media organisations/academic institutions during their training itself. Ever since inception the Department has invited eminent academicians, journalists and professionals from various fields to interact with the students. The Department has organised many workshops/seminars on several topics including Development Communication, Rural Development, Research Methodology, Mother Tongue and Media: Challenges and Prospects.
